आज २० मार्च. बरोबर ९९ वर्षांपूर्वी याच दिवशी महाडच्या चवदार तळ्यावर डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकरांनी केवळ पाणी प्यायले नव्हते, तर शतकानुशतकांच्या गुलामीच्या साखळ्या तोडून 'मानुसकीचा जाहीरनामा' वाचला होता. आज या ऐतिहासिक क्रांतीला ९९ वर्षे पूर्ण होत असून, उद्यापासून आपण या क्रांतीच्या 'शताब्दी' (१०० व्या) वर्षात पदार्पण करत आहोत.

गेल्या नऊ दशकांत महाडच्या त्या ऐतिहासिक घटनेने देशाचे सामाजिक आणि राजकीय चित्र पूर्णपणे बदलून टाकले आहे:

पाण्याचा अधिकार ते घटनात्मक अधिकार: १९२७ मध्ये चवदार तळ्याचे पाणी पिणे हा 'गुन्हा' मानला जात होता. आज ९९ वर्षांनंतर, भारतीय संविधानाच्या कलम १५ आणि १७ मुळे कोणत्याही सार्वजनिक ठिकाणचा वापर करणे हा प्रत्येक भारतीयाचा मूलभूत अधिकार आहे. हा प्रवास 'पाण्याच्या हक्का'कडून 'मानवी प्रतिष्ठे'कडे झाला आहे.

अंधश्रद्धेकडून विज्ञानाकडे: ९९ वर्षांपूर्वी ज्या समाजाला 'अस्पृश्य' ठरवून वाळीत टाकले होते, तोच समाज आज बाबासाहेबांच्या 'धम्म' विचारामुळे अंधश्रद्धा झुगारून विज्ञानाकडे वळला आहे. हा वैचारिक बदल महाडच्या सत्याग्रहाचे सर्वात मोठे यश आहे.

शिक्षणाची नवी क्षितीजे: पूर्वी ज्यांच्या हातात लेखणी नाकारली होती, आज त्याच समाजातील मुले परदेशातील ऑक्सफर्ड, कोलंबिया सारख्या विद्यापीठांत उच्च शिक्षण घेत आहेत. 'शिका' या मंत्राने ९९ वर्षांत शैक्षणिक क्रांती घडवून आणली आहे.

डिजिटल क्रांती आणि संघर्षाचे स्वरूप: पूर्वीचा संघर्ष हा केवळ रस्त्यावरचा होता, पण आजचा संघर्ष 'डिजिटल' झाला आहे. आजचा बौद्ध युवक सोशल मीडियाच्या माध्यमातून आपल्या हक्कांसाठी जागतिक स्तरावर आवाज उठवत आहे.

बौद्ध युवकांसाठी 'धम्म' संदेश: आता जबाबदारी आपली!

महाडच्या क्रांतीचे वारसदार म्हणून आजच्या युवकांनी यातून तीन महत्त्वाचे बोध घेणे गरजेचे आहे:

बौद्धिक प्रगल्भता वाढवा (शिका): बाबासाहेबांनी सत्याग्रह करण्यापूर्वी कायद्याचा आणि इतिहासाचा दांडगा अभ्यास केला होता. केवळ भावनांच्या आहारी न जाता, अभ्यासाच्या जोरावर आपले मत मांडण्याची कला युवकांनी आत्मसात करावी.

संयम आणि शिस्त (संघटित व्हा): सनातन्यांनी हल्ला केला तरी महाडमध्ये आंबेडकरी अनुयायांनी हातातील लाठी उगारली नव्हती. हा 'धम्म' संयम आजच्या आक्रमक काळात युवकांनी पाळणे आवश्यक आहे.

कौशल्य विकास (Skill Development): आजच्या स्पर्धात्मक युगात केवळ पदव्या पुरेशा नाहीत. 'कुशल' (Skilled) बनून आर्थिकदृष्ट्या सक्षम होणे, हाच खऱ्या अर्थाने बाबासाहेबांना अपेक्षित असलेला प्रबुद्ध भारत असेल.

पुढच्या वर्षी आपण महाड सत्याग्रहाचे १०० वे वर्ष साजरे करू. हे वर्ष केवळ उत्सवाचे नसावे, तर ते 'कृती'चे असावे. प्रत्येक बौद्ध युवकाने आपल्या गावातील, शहरातील वंचितांना शिक्षणाच्या प्रवाहात आणण्यासाठी एक पाऊल उचलले पाहिजे.

Exactly 99 years ago on this very day, at the Chavdar Tale (Sweet Water Tank) in Mahad, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar did not merely drink water; he shattered the chains of centuries-old slavery and proclaimed a 'Manifesto of Humanity.' Today marks the completion of 99 years of this historic revolution, and starting tomorrow, we step into the 'Centenary' (100th) year of this transformative movement.

Over the past nine decades, that historic event in Mahad has completely reshaped the social and political landscape of the nation:

From the Right to Water to Constitutional Rights: In 1927, drinking water from the Chavdar Tale was considered a 'crime.' Today—99 years later—thanks to Articles 15 and 17 of the Indian Constitution, the access to and use of any public place is a fundamental right of every Indian citizen. This journey has evolved from a mere 'right to water' to the affirmation of 'human dignity.'

From Superstition to Science: The very community that was once branded as 'untouchable' and ostracized 99 years ago has, today—inspired by Babasaheb's philosophy of 'Dhamma'—cast aside superstition and embraced a scientific temper. This ideological transformation stands as the greatest triumph of the Mahad Satyagraha.

New Horizons in Education: For those who were once denied the pen—forbidden from holding it in their hands—children from that very same community are today pursuing higher education at prestigious universities abroad, such as Oxford and Columbia. The mantra "Educate!" has, over these 99 years, catalyzed a profound educational revolution.

The Digital Revolution and the Evolving Nature of Struggle: While the struggles of the past were confined primarily to the streets, today's struggle has gone 'digital.' The Buddhist youth of today are raising their voices globally in defense of their rights, leveraging the power of social media. A 'Dhamma' Message for Buddhist Youth: The Responsibility Is Now Ours!

As heirs to the revolution of Mahad, today's youth must draw three crucial lessons from this legacy:

Cultivate Intellectual Maturity (Learn): Before undertaking the Satyagraha, Babasaheb engaged in an extensive study of both law and history. Rather than being swayed solely by emotions, the youth must master the art of articulating their views backed by rigorous study.

Patience and Discipline (Organize): Even when attacked by orthodox forces, the Ambedkarite followers at Mahad did not raise the sticks they held in their hands. In today's aggressive times, it is imperative that the youth uphold this 'Dhamma' patience.

Skill Development: In today's competitive era, academic degrees alone are not sufficient. Becoming 'skilled'—and thereby economically empowered—is what truly constitutes the 'Enlightened India' envisioned by Babasaheb.

Next year, we will celebrate the centenary (100th anniversary) of the Mahad Satyagraha. This year should not merely be a time for celebration, but a time for 'action.' Every Buddhist youth must take a concrete step to bring the marginalized and deprived sections of their village or city into the mainstream of education.
